TV MOUNTING NYC

TV SALES & INSTALLATION

We spend a lot of time watching TV.  Whether it is for news, sports, entertainment or education, television plays a big role in our lives and Christopher Williams Design of NYC is your TV mounting headquarters.  Most homes have several TV sets—usually more sets than people.  Fortunately, modern televisions are sleek and relatively light.  In recent memory, televisions were large and heavy boxes.  Hiding older TVs required large, heavy furniture or expensive custom carpentry.  TV technology now enables screen sizes that were impossible in the past, and picture quality is the best we have ever seen.  Finding ways to mount all those TVs can be overwhelming, fortunately, we have a lot of options for you and your New York City home.

WHERE SHOULD YOU MOUNT YOUR TV?

It is always exciting to purchase a new TV and getting the largest one possible to fit can be challenging. This short video can give you some ideas or call us today for an expert opinion, there are more options you may not know about.

WHICH TV IS BEST FOR ME?

There are so many buzz words when it comes to purchasing a TV and we are here to help. The first question is usually... how big? We can stop by and show you different size posters that reflect the size of a TV that simplifies the process. Your also going to want to know what resolution and the best way to enjoy the sound of your television. TV's today are made ultra thin so it is impossible to have a speaker built in that gives you quality audio that matches the size and detail of your screen. We cover some of these topics below.

WHAT SIZE TV?

In every design consultation, we inevitably hear this question, “how big a screen do I need?”  While there is no definitive answer to this question, there are two primary variables to consider.  The first is the distance from your seat to the screen.  Depending on the authority we consult, seating distance should be between 1.4 and 2 times the screen diagonal.  Within that range, viewer comfort becomes the other important factor.  If you typically sit in the middle of a movie theater, pick a distance in the middle of that range, say 1.7x screen size.   If you like to sit toward the front of the house, shoot for 1.4x.  If you like to sit toward the rear of the theater, you will be more comfortable at a 2x distance.

WHAT RESOLUTION?

Now that we have settled on a screen size and we know the seating distance, it is time to consider resolution.  At present, there are three main specs available: 1080p, 4k or 8k.  The numbers refer to the number of horizontal and vertical pixels which make up the picture.  4k is higher resolution than 1080, and 8k is better than 4k.  You never want to see the individual screen pixels, so the closer you are, the more it matters.  Generally speaking, 4k is the right choice.  If you have opted for one of the larger sizes, consider investing in an 8k set.

WHICH FEATURES?

Today's Televisions are packed with almost as many features as your mobile phone. They are called smart TV's after all and that is an understatement. With a smart TV you can expect all your favorite media apps built in including Netflix, Hulu, amazon prime and YouTube. This means you can "cut the cord" in Austin and still have all your favorite channels along with all the streaming services you can imagine. Higher end sets have a camera built in so you can video conference with family friends who live anywhere in the world. This feature will only grow as we spend more time at home and look to communicate with family and friends from the comfort of our living rooms. You can also surf your favorite social media platforms and play immersive games without the investment of a gaming console.  Again, This can be overwhelming which leaves you not using these amazing options, so our team will spend time with you setting up your preferences and make sure everything is Simple.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

As you now know, there are lots of variables that determine how much it costs to install a TV.  A relatively small TV on a simple static or tilt mount is the least expensive option.  Bigger TVs require special handling.  Motorized mounts or hidden installations are the costliest, but they make up for it with their show-stopping flair.  Below you can learn about all the different options and we will help price out the best Television installation for your needs.

WHAT ABOUT SOUND?

As wonderful as today’s sleek and elegant televisions can be, that thinness comes at a price.  There is simply no room for good speakers.  This means that we need to go external for the audio.  Adding a soundbar to a TV will handle many situations.  That solution may be the best choice for bedrooms.  However, for the family room—or perhaps the master bedroom—we recommend a more immersive surround sound setup.  This involves an AV receiver and several speakers.  Not to fear, those speakers can be placed in the ceiling, or they can be totally invisible ala Stealth Acoustics. We also offer a complete line of soundbars including the Sonos Arc.

WALL MOUNTING

Hanging the TV on the wall is by far the most popular choice.  Different styles of mounts allow great flexibility.  Whether you want your set mounted flat on the wall or tiltable, modern mounts are remarkably thin, placing the TV very close to the wall.  There are also full-motion mounts which allow the TV to be swiveled as well as tilted.  This option can be helpful when you want to watch from two rooms.  Regardless of mounting style—static, tilt or full-motion—placing the TV on the wall offers reassuring safety.  A TV placed on a tabletop depends on gravity to keep it in place.  Accidents happen.  Children and pets are much safer when our sets are securely attached to the wall.

FIREPLACE MOUNT

Rooms with fireplaces present us with special challenges.  Usually, the fireplace tends to dominate, and it becomes the focus of the room.  Adding a big screen TV to such a room is not easy.  The temptation to place the TV over the fireplace seems almost irresistible.  However, putting a TV over the mantel usually means placing it at an uncomfortable viewing height.  The solution to what would otherwise mean a stiff neck is special mounts designed specifically for these situations.  They park the TV above the mantel when not in use (or displaying artwork) and then lower it to a comfortable height when it’s time to watch a show.  Our designers will help you decide on the right screen size for your viewing preferences and the layout of the room.

HIDDEN TELEVISIONS

HIDING THE WIRES

It is often required that we make the TV totally disappear.  Such magic is now easily accomplished.  There are motorized mounts which can park a TV above the ceiling, below the floor, or inside a cabinet.  We even have mounts which can hide a TV under a bed!  Another option is to conceal the TV behind a mirror or a piece of art.  When particularly large screen sizes are desired, we recommend switching from a flat panel TV to a projector and screen.  Motorized screens and projector mounts are one option.  Another possibility is to place the projector in the next room and to build a rear-projection screen into the wall.
